Mt Longonot is one of the best places to go hiking from Nairobi. It is a fascinating dormant volcano located 60km from the city and is said to have last erupted in the 1800s. It is 750m above the floor of the Rift valley and 2776m above the sea level.

It takes about two hours to hike from the park entrance to the crater rim. The hike starts on a level ground and then proceeds into a steep climb that is layered with fine dust and lose gravel. The journey towards the rim is surrounded by trees and bushes. The hike is also made less steeper with the availability of stair like paths and big bags filled with sand. There are also various rest stops where one can re energize, catch a glimpse of the scenic Rift Valley and catch up with the hiking team.

Dream Team

Once at the crater rim, it takes about two more hours to go around it. Therefore, the whole hike takes four hours or more depending on one’s fitness level. The crater rim provides for a cool resting stop, a great scenic view of the thick forest within the crater, the spectacular Great Rift Valley, the awesome Lake Naivasha and wildlife such as buffaloes, zebras and gazelles. The hike is not easy but is achievable for people of moderate fitness.

The first section from the park entrance to the rim crater is not that difficult as the second section around the rim crater. The hike around the rim crater is quite steep and with some areas being narrow and rocky. At some point, one has to use both their hands and feet to make it to the top. Therefore, one should be in proper shoes with a good sole. The highest point is known as Kilele Ngamia whereby there is a resting point. The hikers can engage in an epic photo session, have their snacks and savor the sight of the amazing horizon across the spectacular Rift Valley.

The Climb

Throughout the hike, one feels like giving up but it’s easier finishing it than going back. The hike is also made much easier with the company of a team and a guide who would motivate you to keep pushing and assist you in case of an emergency. The scenic views of the flora and fauna in the Great Rift Valley also make every pain staking step worth it. One should also carry a cap to prevent sun burns, bright clothes as they work well in case of an emergency, water and energizing snacks. The hike is sure to break a sweat so one should be in light clothing but can carry a rain coat as the weather can be unpredictable.

Tired but Thrilled to have completed the hike

At the end of the hike one feels completely accomplished despite feeling worn out. This is the best way to test ones limit and build self confidence in one’s self. There are other activities that one can engage in around the mountain other than just hiking. They include biking, camping on the floor of the crater or visiting the Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort after hiking. This is an adventure that is sure to be unforgettable.

Team building exercises are essential for an organization’s growth. For team building to work, it has to be motivational and fun. Hiking the Ngong hills is one of the best ways to engage in team building activities as it enables colleagues to communicate with one another and rely on each other to make it to the end.

The Ngong hills are a long stretch comprised of seven hills. It starts from Ngong police station on a dirt road. Here, before the hike commences and people break into groups, stretching is done to ensure that the hike is seamless. There after colleagues can walk in groups getting to know each other better while sharing things such as water and snacks.

As the hike continues, the dirt road thins into steep nature trails and the hills become tougher to tackle. Here, colleagues motivate one another to keep pushing on as no man should be left behind.

They also get to enjoy beautiful views of the white majestic windmills, the towering radio repeater station masts and the scenic nature. This close knit association and team work will assure delivery of better services in an organization.

After completing the seven hills, the hike ends along a vast green land. Here, colleagues can relax as they catch up as they stretch. They can also take group photos and engage in team building games.

The hike finally ends at Kona Baridi where they can then proceed to have lunch and drinks together at Olepolos country club where they can have a cool and open space to discuss various issues and have fun.

The Ngong hills is the perfect place for team building as it provides the best opportunity for communication and collaboration between work mates.

Ziplining is currently a world sensation. It’s one of the activities that will have your heart pounding in excitement as you “fly through the sky”. It’s why it was exciting to get the chance to Zipline at  the forest  not only because I was interested in the epic dose of adrenaline that comes with ziplining,  but also because the Ziplines at Kereita, are the longest in East Africa and the second longest in Africa. How epic is that?

This begs the question, if you are in Kenya and you have not gone ziplining at the forest, what are you doing with your life? This is the perfect weekend activity that should be ticked off your bucket list, whether it is on your list or not.

I went ziplining for the first time a few weeks ago and naturally I was afraid of the unknown. After signing a waiver and going through a mini training on what to expect during ziplining, we were ready to fly.

I made the decision to go first, and once I got to the platform, my nerves got the best of me. They decided I was not going to have peace of mind. The guide, noticing how tightly I clenched on the harness and cable, told me to relax and gently pushed me off the platform.

I briefly shut my eyes and a few seconds in to the flying, I opened my eyes and my goodness, the views were breathtaking! If there is a definition of picturesque views then Kereita is one of them. For a few seconds I forgot I was hanging in the air. All I did was feel the freshness of the crisp, clean air in my lungs.  It was so beautiful that I did not even realize I had almost come to the end of the line until I heard the instructor yell, “BRAKE!” The experience was mind blowing and I wanted to zipline again and again! In case you are wondering what happened to the nervous wreck that I was, I also have no idea.

The postcard views and the fresh air will make you decide to move here because first of all, I am not used to such where I live and secondly  the adrenaline rush is intense. For those few minutes, I appreciated the beauty that comes with nature and I wanted to move. Of course I did not move. It’s the adrenaline but I reckon you will understand once you go ziplining. The last line was even better because I was out to have fun so all I did was relax back on the harness and enjoy the views. You can never get used to the views! I promise. The ziplines at kereita are thrilling and they weave through the stunningly green forest, and all you need to do is relax and keep your eyes open.

Moto Gari SafarisI felt safe ziplining at the forest because they have knowledgeable and funny guides that are on each side of the zipline to help with the harness. As you can see, we were always in gloves and we were given strict instructions to guide us.  Assuming, you are afraid of heights, will saying children as young as eleven years take part in this activity convince you to face your fears? Okay, maybe you will not buy that. I wouldn’t either. However, I hope my experience will convince you to go ziplining.

Would you go ziplining?

Most of us probably watched Lion King growing up so you can imagine how magical it was for a couple of travelers and I when we visited Hell’s gate National park, the location that inspired “Pride Rock” in the lion King.

On the drive to Hells Gate, we made two pit stops. The first stop was at the famous small church that was built by Italian prisoners of war in the 1940s.

The next stop was at the evergreen Great Rift Valley viewpoint.  It’s hard not to see why everyone makes a stop here since Mother Nature is always at her most beautiful.

Serene Views

After 1.5 hours, we arrived at Hell’s Gate National Park. We immediately started taking in how beautiful the scenery is. This park is nothing but breathtaking with lush landscaped grounds and a tranquil ambience that made me know I had made an excellent choice to visit the park that Saturday morning.

Game Viewing

As if the views were not enough, we slowly drove through the park and I noticed that the park is blessed with extraordinary red clock cliffs on each side with several kinds of wild animals grazing in peaceful paradise. After a short while, we got a chance to alight and view the animals up close.  Imagine being given the opportunity to be so close to wild animals like Zebras and Impalas? It was truly amazing to indulge in the spectacular beauty of the park while being able to get so close to the animals. No one wanted to leave because you do not simply walk away from Mother Nature.

Gorges and Hot springs

However, we had to leave and move on to see the rock formation sites inside the gorge that is made of the devil’s bedroom and natural hot springs that erupt from the rocks.  It was quite a challenge going up to the hot springs but once we got there, we saw that it was worth it.

An Afternoon of relaxation

After our short hike, we got a chance to have an afternoon of relaxation at the Olkaria geothermal spa.

This is one of the largest pools in Kenya and the fact that it’s a hot spa with healing properties makes it the only one of its kind in Africa.  Yes. You will not find such a pool anywhere in Africa.  These pictures do not lie, the pool is really crystal turquoise blue in color and a swim will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

A visit to Hell’s gate national park is indeed killing several birds with one stone because you engage in amazing activities all in a single day.
